Mother’s Day Musings

“Pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord; lift up your hands to Him for the life of your little ones…” Lamentations 2:19

Several years ago I was at a wedding where I watched as the mother of the groom danced with her son while, due to the premature death of her husband, the mother of the bride danced with her daughter. It was like an explosion in my heart.

Years of pouring into their lives being celebrated in a single dance. Time to release and let go, and trust God to carry on what both mothers so greatly invested in. Deep sigh…

It’s difficult to imagine how encompassing having children is. From the moment of conception, a mother’s heart is permanently tied to the life growing within her. And then she’s expected to train that little one towards independence.

The tough part is that we can’t shield them from life’s deepest disappointments and it’s crushing to stand by unable to change their circumstances. Unfortunately, children don’t always make the choices we hope they will either. It’s not easy being a mom but it’s worth every tear.

On this Mother’s Day, remember the countless hours and unspoken heart cries poured out by your mother on your behalf. In some small way touch her heart and bring salve to the places that ache in her, and you will have honored her more than you can imagine…

Lord, would You please touch my mother’s heart this day with Your tender Love. You are well-acquainted with her grief and able to comfort her in ways that no one else can. I pray that You would affirm and strengthen her as she presses in to know You. Carry her in Your arms of Love, Jesus, and be the lifter of her head. Amen.
